Rugby World Cup wait for Football League and Premier League on fixture list – Charles Sale

The staging of the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England will remain dependant on the goodwill of the Premier League and Football League right up until two months before the September start of the tournament.

England Rugby 2015 announced their full venue and fixture list on Thursday, seven weeks later than originally scheduled by the International Rugby Board, because of the fraught negotiations around the use of the Olympic Stadium and Old Trafford’s late withdrawal.

The World Cup have heads of agreement staging terms in place for the use of three Premier League grounds at Manchester City, Newcastle and Aston Villa and four Football League venues.

Goodwill: Debbie Jevans (centre) was at the unveiling of the Rugby World Cup fixtures on Thursday

But both football bodies are adamant that no binding guarantees will be signed until after their 2015-16 fixture schedules are published in June 2015 and TV companies have completed their match choices the following month.

England Rugby 2015 chief executive Debbie Jevans mentioned the ‘great support’ she has received from Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore and Football League chairman Greg Clarke.

But the agreements remain just promises to do everything they can ‘within their gift’ to accommodate rugby – with the football venues reminded their sport takes priority.

The complexity of staging the tournament at the start of a busy football season is shown by Jevans also talking to UEFA over possible Champions League and Europa League clashes.

Belfast World Cup qualfier postponed

March 22nd, 2013 by MichaelloUR

Workmen attempt to clear the Windsor Park pitch this morning following a night of heavy snow. Photograph: Jonathan Porter/Inpho/Presseye

Northern Ireland’s World Cup football qualifying fixture against Russia due to be played at Windsor Park tonight (7.45) has been called off after the pitch was deemed unplayable following an inspection this afternoon. Heavy overnight snow was the culprit.

The Irish Football Association (IFA) confirmed the decision after an official pitch inspection of the South Belfast stadium later today. The match will now take place at the same venue tomorrow (3.0).

Question marks will naturally be raised over the likelihood of the game taking place tomorrow, with more bad weather expected through the night. The IFA announced a briefing for 10.30am tomorrow morning, during which more details will be provided.

IFA staff including chief executive Patrick Nelson did their best to salvage the situation today by shovelling snow from the pitch in grim conditions, but their efforts were in vain.

Windsor Park, home to Irish League outfit Linfield, is among the more basic on the international circuit and has little to no defence against the elements, such as under-soil heating. The delay is likely to cause additional problems, with Northern Ireland due to host Israel in the second match of the Group F double-header on Tuesday.

That match is now itself in some doubt, with the pitch highly unlikely to be in an acceptable condition should a game go ahead this weekend. Russia, meanwhile, are due to play Brazil in a friendly at Stamford Bridge on Monday but now face the prospect of a one-day break between games.

The inclement weather also forced the closure of the runway at George Best Belfast City Airport and the Association of Northern Ireland Supporters Clubs registered their concerns with the IFA over the safety of fans travelling to the match.

Horse racing has also been hit with Friday evenings Dundalk card called off due to high winds.

The eight-race card was due to start at 5.50pm but officials have cancelled the fixture due to the inclement weather.

Soccer-Potential Oceania World Cup decider riddled with sub-text

March 21st, 2013 by wholesalefhlnk

By Greg Stutchbury

March 21 (Reuters) – New Zealand’s preparations for their crucial World Cup qualifier match against New Caledonia in Dunedin on Friday could not have been more riddled with sub-text.

Former captain Ryan Nelsen, considered the stabilising force in the side, hastily retired in January to take up a coaching role at Major League Soccer’s club Toronto FC.

Then coach Ricki Herbert quit his club job with the A-League’s Wellington Phoenix.

Herbert then asked his former club captain Andrew Durante if he was interested in replacing Nelsen in the centre of New Zealand’s defence, pending approval from world governing body FIFA.

Australian-born Durante had fulfilled residency requirements but by Wednesday still not had definitive approval from FIFA that he could play, forcing New Zealand Football not to select him for the match in case he was declared ineligible later.

To top that all off, if the All Whites actually win the game at the Otago Regional Stadium, they qualify for the intercontinental playoff for a place at the 2014 finals in Brazil against the fourth-placed CONCACAF side later this year with a game to spare.

New Zealand, who will now be led by West Ham United’s Winston Reid, are unbeaten on 12 points in the final round of Oceania qualifying and beat New Caledonia 2-0 last September in Noumea.

Les Cagous, however, have produced three high-scoring victories since that loss to sit just three points behind the All Whites and have a goal difference of +11, while New Zealand have a goal difference of +12.

A draw or loss would mean that New Zealand would need to win, and win well, in Honiara on March 26 when they face the Solomon Islands, something Herbert was well aware of.

Ronaldinho still in my World Cup plans: Scolari

March 6th, 2013 by wholesalefhlnk

Rio de Janeiro, March 6 (IANS) Brazil’s national football coach Luiz Felipe Scolari insists that former star Ronaldinho remains in his World Cup plans despite leaving the two-time FIFA World Player of the Year out of a 22-man squad to face Italy and Russia.

Speaking during a press conference here Tuesday, Scolari said Ronaldinho would have another chance to earn a place in Brazil’s squad for June’s Confederations Cup, reports Xinhua.

“Ronaldinho will be called up next time,” the 2002 World Cup-winning coach said. “All potential World Cup squad members will be given at least two matches to be looked at.”

The former Barcelona star’s fellow veteran and Ballon d’Or winner Kaka was recalled after being omitted from the team that lost to England 2-1 at London’s Wembley Stadium last month.

Ronaldinho played in the match but missed an early penalty and was substituted at half-time.

“Kaka’s return goes with our philosophy of giving everybody a chance,” Scolari said.

“Many of the players are fighting for the same position. I will observe all of them and then I will decide who will go to the Confederations Cup.”

Brazil will play Italy in Geneva March 21 before meeting Russia at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge in London four days later.

As expected Paris Saint-Germain stars Lucas and Thiago Silva have been included along with strikers Neymar (Santos) and Hulk (Zenit Saint-Petersburg’s Hulk).

Scolari also called up in-form Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa for the first time.

World Cup – FIFA approves goal-line technology for 2014

February 19th, 2013 by MichaelloUR

Two systems, Hawkeye and Goalref, have so far been licensed by FIFA and both were used at last year’s Club World Cup in Japan, one in each of the two stadiums, where goal-line technology was employed for the first time.

FIFA said a third system, developed in Germany, had already passed examinations and that the providers were in licensing discussions. A fourth system, also German, has also been tested with the results due this week.

FIFA confirmed goal-line technology was “successful” at the Club World Cup, although there were no incidents where it had to be used.

It intends to install goal-line technology at all 12 venues at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

“After a successful implementation of goal-line technology (GLT) at the Club World Cup in Japan in December 2012, FIFA has decided to use GLT at the Confederations Cup Brazil 2013 and 2014 World Cup,” FIFA said in a statement.

“The aim is to use GLT in order to support the match officials and to install a system in all stadia, pending the successful installation, and pre-match referee tests.

“With different technologies on the market, FIFA has launched a tender today, setting out the technical requirements for the two forthcoming competitions in Brazil.”

FIFA said Hawkeye and Goalref would have to join the selection process.

Goal-line technology providers had been invited to join an inspection visit to the six Confederations Cup venues in March. Those venues will all be staging matches at the following year’s World Cup.

The use of goal-line technology, to help match officials in cases where it is not immediately clear if the ball has entered the goal, was approved by football’s rule-making body, the International Football Association Board (IFAB), last year.

World Cup – Maracana rebuilding hit by workers' strike

February 18th, 2013 by LISAqq26

The midfielder proved his worth again to England with Wednesday night’s winner against Brazil, with his 27th goal for his country in his 94th international putting him level with David Platt. As things stand, Lampard is set to leave Chelsea this summer after not being offered a new contract.

But Lampard is aiming to give himself the best opportunity to be in contention to be part of the England squad to go to Brazil – assuming they qualify. He said: “Maybe the World Cup is within reach but I’m certainly not getting carried away.”

He added: “I know how football is and from squad to squad it can change, and when you get to the age of 34, 35 this summer, people do look upon things differently and fair enough. I’m very understanding of where I’m at in my career.

“But if I can continue playing for Chelsea and continue contributing here, whether it’s starting or as a valuable squad member, and when I do my bit, then the World Cup is getting a bit nearer. It’s certainly a target for me and, yes, I will try to keep playing at a good enough level to get there. I won’t retire from England before that, put it that way.”

Lampard admits England can now have cause for greater optimism thanks to the form of the fit again Jack Wilshere and the pace now in the side, as demonstrated against the Brazilians.

He said: “I know Jack is going to be a top player. Only a terrible injury halted him and he has come back and filled straight in. I don’t want to heap silly pressure on him because he is very young and we shouldn’t do that.

“But the way he is performing now, it’s up to him how far he wants to go because he is going to be a massive, massive player for England, that’s for sure. Jack got man of the match and quite rightly so, because he was what he has been since he was back in the Arsenal team.

However, Lampard admits there is still room for improvement, saying: “The good thing about us and the management and staff is that there is a desire always to do better. I think we could have better possession at times in the game, be more comfortable on the ball, and that goes for all of us.

“There is certainly improvement to be made but this is a nice step in the right direction.”

Are England world cup winners in the making?

February 12th, 2013 by comment utiliser viagra

The great works of literature tell us that comparisons are either invidious or odious. They can also be ridiculous and dangerous at one and the same time. Owen Farrell is routinely described as the “new Jonny Wilkinson”, even though it is difficult to imagine anyone less likely to embrace Buddhism in one of its more esoteric forms or spend the small hours wrestling with the philosophical conundrums associated with Schrdinger’s cat. The very last thing the street-fighting midfielder from Wigan needs to do is start contemplating his own navel.

Then there is the notion that three straight wins over New Zealand, Scotland and Ireland all of them full of promise, in their different ways makes this England team the mirror image of the one preparing itself for ultimate glory at a similar stage of the World Cup cycle in 2001. This is to compare apples with pomegranates. Back then, Clive Woodward had been in charge of red-rose affairs for three-and-a-half years. Stuart Lancaster? He has been in post for 14-and-a-half months, the first five of which were on a trial basis.

England’s team of the early Noughties was the best in Europe by a country kilometre. In the first four games of that year’s Six Nations, they put 44 points on Wales in Cardiff and smashed the living bejaysus out of Italy, Scotland and France at Twickenham, with an aggregate scoreline of 171-45. Tries? You couldn’t move for the things. Woodward’s team, revelling in an all-court game brilliantly plotted by the attack coach Brian Ashton, zoomed along at the supersonic rate of seven a game.

As Woodward wrote in his book Winning!, published a few months after the World Cup triumph, it was a “magical time for the team”; a “golden period of 15-man, free-flowing rugby that had the crowd standing on their seats a spontaneous tribute to performances that were both spectacular and clinical.” For all the many virtues displayed by the current side in recent weeks the precision and variety that took them past the reigning world champions from New Zealand; the mastery of gainline rugby brought to bear on the emasculated Scots; the fire and fury that subdued an Irish team who thought they had the monopoly on all the f-words that mattered Lancaster is not thinking in terms of magical times or golden periods. Quite the opposite.

“People talked about this being a Grand Slam decider,” he said in Dublin on Sunday, an hour or so after watching his young team take another significant step up the mountainside by prevailing in the darkest, most malevolent contest of his stewardship. “I can assure you that we haven’t been thinking that way, and won’t be thinking that way. We’re a pretty grounded group and we know that if you get too far ahead of yourself, you take your eye off the ball. Next up is France at home: all things point to that and nothing else.

“We have some downtime now and it will be nice to recharge mentally before reviewing things and learning some lessons from what happened here. I think the need for consistency will be the main thing. We’re playing well for periods, but there are lapses of concentration.”

So far, so cautious. But Lancaster is too cute not to realise that the level of public excitement around the national team is greater now than at any point since the World Cup victory. Even when England reached the final of the 2007 tournament in France, thereby finding themselves within 80 minutes of a successful title defence, there was something muted about the response amongst the rank and file. The humiliating 36-0 defeat by the Springboks in the pool stage had made Tony Hancock-like curmudgeons of us all.

This level of frenzy is good for business: Francis Baron, the chief executive of the Rugby Football Union throughout the previous decade, was enough of a hard-bitten businessman to calculate the benefits of victory in increased merchandising revenue, and if his successor, Ian Ritchie, is not quite a pea from the same pod, his commercial department is being extremely aggressive in marketing Lancaster’s team as an honest, hard-working bunch of proud Englishmen with their collective heart in the right place.

But in terms of solid achievement, this vintage is very different from Woodward’s 2001ers. A dozen years ago, the great back row of Richard Hill, Neil Back and Lawrence Dallaglio was already a settled unit; Martin Johnson and Phil Vickery, the two cornerstones of the tight five, were firmly in place; and the half-back partnership of Wilkinson and Matt Dawson was close to being cemented. What was more, Will Greenwood was reaching full flower as a midfield maestro and Jason Robinson had been drafted into the match-day squad.

Lancaster has found his Vickery in Dan Cole, currently the leading tight-head prop in the world game, and if Ben Youngs is going to perform the crucial scrum-half role as he did against Ireland, as opposed to against Scotland, it is perfectly possible to see he and Farrell staying together right the way through to the home World Cup two-and-a-half years from now. But there is development to be done and decisions to be made in every other area. Team-building, well advanced under Woodward in 2001, is still at a relatively early stage with Lancaster in 2013.

World Football – Feyenoord beat Groningen

December 23rd, 2012 by admin

PSV Eindhoven, 6-1 winners over NAC Breda on Saturday, are top with 40 points after 18 matches, ahead of Twente Enschede, who beat AZ Alkmaar 3-0, on goal difference.

Ajax Amsterdam are third with 37 points after being held to a 0-0 draw by Utrecht and with a better goal difference then Feyenoord. The arch-rivals will meet in Amsterdam after the winter break, on January 20.

Feyenoord and Groningen endured a lacklustre first half but 13 minutes after the break Pelle notched up the opener from a corner kick by Jordy Clasie.

Groningen defender Virgil van Dijk levelled the score 13 minutes before time when he picked up a deflected cross and scored but, with three minutes remaining, Pelle struck a tight-angled shot to settle the match.

“(It was) a difficult first half in which we created nothing but we turned the tide after the break because we have a striker who is decisive,” coach Ronald Koeman said.

“Last year we had John Guidetti who did perfectly and added some character to the team but Pelle is not only scoring but also always very valuable as target man,” he said of the Italian who was signed on loan from Parma on the final day of the August transfer window.

Ajax, who had won their previous six matches, overwhelmed Utrecht in the first half and created several chances but Siem de Jong, Derk Boerrigter and Viktor Fischer wasted them.

Utrecht, who have now gone six league matches unbeaten against Ajax, finished with 10 men after a late second booking for Dave Bulthuis.

Willem II Tilburg finished the first half of the season bottom of the league with 12 points despite a 0-0 draw at neighbours RKC Waalwijk on Sunday.

World Football – Ajax reach Dutch Cup quarter-finals

December 21st, 2012 by saidina

The visitors were denied an early opening goal when keeper Luciano saved a shot from Derk Boerrigter then De Jong made no mistake after 25 minutes with a shot from 20 metres that went in off the post.

Four minutes into the second half Eriksen made it 2-0 with a superb running volley that went over Luciano and Boerrigter set up Fischer to settle the match in the 60th minute.

“We played very effectively today although we didn’t create many chances but we controlled the match,” said Ajax skipper De Jong.

“Our early second goal was decisive as Groningen changed their tactical plan after the break by playing one-on-one in their defence to try to get back in the match.”

Ronald Koeman’s Feyenoord beat Marco van Basten’s Heerenveen 7-6 on penalties on Wednesday to reach the quarter-finals, joined by Vitesse Arnhem who hammered amateurs ADO’20 Heemskerk 10-1.

Holders PSV Eindhoven also reached the last eight with a comfortable 4-0 win at Rijnsburgse Boys on Tuesday.

World Football – PSV back on top but rue late Nijmegen equaliser

December 17th, 2012 by Gogokx

PSV have 37 points from 17 matches, level with Twente Enschede who beat neighbours Heracles Almelo 3-2 on Friday.

Vitesse Arnhem, who entertain RKC Waalwijk on Sunday, are third with 34 points.

Mathias Jorgensen marked his second league appearance for PSV by heading them in front after 10 minutes.

Dick Advocaat’s team dominated the rest of the game and went close early in the second half when wingers Luciano Narsingh and Jeremain Lens missed good chances.

Palsson, 21, then made PSV pay for their profligacy in front of goal when his excellent curling shot found the top corner for hosts Nijmegen with 10 minutes to go.

“We were in control but we needed to take our chances to decide the match,” said skipper Mark van Bommel.

US international Jozy Altidore struck twice in the first half to halt a streak of six matches without a win for 12th-placed AZ Alkmaar as they triumphed 2-1 at PEC Zwolle.

Zwolle had Joey van den Berg sent off 12 minutes from time for a professional foul.

Elsewhere, Groningen and Roda JC Kerkrade were held 0-0 at home by VVV Venlo and NAC Breda respectively.
